"Learning to read as a young student allowed me to comprehend and master subjects in school. Only as a top student could I have participated in TRIO, the educational opportunity program that enabled me to attend college. Today, as Congressional Representative to the people of Wisconsin's Fourth District, reading is the skill I use most. By reading letters from constituents, I learn how to best represent their interests. Reading newspapers, books and memos from my staff is how I learn about challenges faced by our nation, and also about possible solutions to these challenges.
